The
demonstration took place at the opening of "Black and White" at Union Square
Cinema, NYC on April 4th, 2000. We had a really good, successful demonstration
that was right accross the streets
from
the opening of "Black and White". Though, I was worried about turnout,
many friends and fellow activists came out, and helped out, as well as
the six folks from the lastparty list. I'm
talking
about myself and my wife, Dorit, the two Laura's (Miller and Vivoni) and
Colleen and her stepson, Travis. Thank you so much for coming!!!!
Also have to thank Suzanne and Jacqueline for making great flyers, which
were passed out at the demo....... And thanks again to Jacqueline for FEDEXing
me flyers, which were also used at the demo. And thanks to everyone else
who supported the demo in any way they could.
In addition to the six of us, two activist friends, Joel and Carl brought a hugh 15 foot banner on poles, that said "Rehab not Jail for Robert Downey Jr". Two friends who have a radical radio show, Paul DeRienzo, and Joan Moosy,,,,, on WBAI were there with us
Allison
Downey flew in from Pennsylvania and held signs and did interviews with
the press. (Robert's sister and only sibling).
Dana Beal, a friend from a group called "Cures, not Wars" brought about 5 to 10 more people, who were great, ... passing out leaflets, chanting with us.. "Free Robert Downey jr"..... and holding up big posters that Dorit and I made and brought with us.
So
we had around 20 people, with banners, posters, leaflets...chanting and
passing them out...... doing interviews with the media.........
I
spoke to "Entertainment tonite"..... "Access Hollywood" and Donovan Leitch,
who was also there with a camera crew, doing his first day of shooting
for "Last Party, 2000".
The police cordoned our demo off with barricades directly across the street
and in front of the theater. So all the media could see us and all the
stars who came could see us and often we would chant as they went "Rehab
not Jail for Robert Downey Jr."
